Re: Saab 9-3 Aero from the UK

Battery terminals I (again!!!) took a gamble and bought some Knukoncepz Tripple 0AWG battery terminals!

Also comes with a 4AWG adapter. Seem to be pretty good terminals as long as they're fitted correctly! With these I can run the normal car power cable into the 4 gauge, run the amps 0 gauge plus add another 0 gauge for the big three upgrade.

These have had mixed reviews but it looks like people aren't fitting them correctly! You have to cut enough of the cables jacket off to splay the actual wires behind the nuts then screw these in. This then secures the wire to the terminal, some just push it in as normal, screw it up then wonder why their cars on fire!

You have to tighten this small bit up with a hex key which grips onto the battery's terminal. Pretty clean design if its done right! Pretty dangerous if you get it wrong as the wire can fall out!

I'll probably re-use my old Bosch S5 from my old 9k Aero to save some cash, if its not up to it i'll look for an Odyssey battery instead....we'll see how it goes.

Also invested in a Hydraulic crimper off ebay. Pretty good bit of kit and very easy to use! Also comes with a selection of dies from 10-120mm2.

I'll be mainly using these ones for TB3 and when I upgrade the girlfriends car later this year.

I also got advised to go for some copper 70mm2 welding lugs instead of 50mm2 as the Knu cable is pretty big and struggles to fit in the 50mm lugs..plus the lugs are waaay cheaper than the car audio stuff and copper, so just bought a few m8 & m10 lugs.

Now for the real fun stuff!

        !!!Deadening!!!

Most of my deadening has come from CAD (car audio direct) if I was to do this again then I'd just get the 2mm stuff as the 4mm multilayer extra was a right pain to work with, and per meter square was a lot more expensive...I don't think ill use it again.

So now have the following to install, fist was the doors, then cabin floor and still have the boot & roof to do.

        CLD Tiles
Silent Coat Multilayer Extra Bulk Pack

Couple tools to replace my old busted ones!

5 Piece Upholstery Removal kit (very handy!!)

        Dynamat Pro Roller

        Trim Panel Popper
        http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/sil-...el-popper.html

MLV I bought later from CAD and was called Dodo MLV, also had to get a bit more Silent coat and 3mm CCF!

Some serious damping is going down!
I like the choice of materials, (hehe, similar to what I've used )

How much are the lugs in the UK? (or wherever u're getting them)
We've been.. ehrm... 'stranded' as a significant supplier of cheap yet great quality lugs has not secured a proper subcontractor :/

I guess that's why nobody recommended these then! My budget was only £350

How do these compare to Morel Ultimo? That's the other set I got offered but they were around £550 used.

Sinfoni amps are definitely on the cards once the performance sides done, I was going to get one sooner but this clutch needs upgrading asap!
Well, that's the price in Sweden..(36000sek)
Not cheap but they sound quite okey..

              Haven't heard ultimo.

Sinfoni is releasing a new line cheaper amps if you want new ones.

And...new grandioso..6.5" and tweeter for the small rekomended price of 5451$..just the speakers..no filter.

Christ these Sinfoni prices are bonkers! I think I'll be saving for some used Amplitude amps for now!

Back to the deadening and I quickly realised this 9-3 was a bit different to the last one (og9-3 vert) and after deadening the doors the bloody door card wouldn't go back on

I deadened the outer skin first with silent coat MLExtra, then covered & sealed the inner skin but the card wouldn't go back on with the CLD sheets covering the panel gaps as the card looks like it moulds into the door frame?

So had to cut out the middle part then recover with CCF (closed cell foam) and it went on ok, pic below also has CCF fitted which I peeled off to reapply the new sheets, I replaced the 8mm stuff with 4mm.

And ontop of that I've added the MLV which was 2mm, made a nice difference all round, cabins a lot quieter.

Re: Saab 9-3 Aero from the UK

On the rear of the door card I've added some Silent Coat sound absorber 15 which is 15mm egg crate foam. Some add more CLD sheets here but I've just added the foam to stop it squeaking against the MLV. Also removed the big blue foam block and covered with the other stuff, as the door card won't go back on. Done the trick!

Some pics of the CCF, MLV & foam.

                    CCF from foam solutions (3 & 6mm)

                    Sound absorber 15

MLV, big heavy sheets at 5gk per meter square! (10 sheets fitted so far!) still have the boot to do.

                    Other doors done

Then covered the lot with CCF (isolator 4) one large sheet was stuck down from the top then worked into the gaps and stuck to the inner skin. Had to make a few holes for the wiring and door lock etc.

Re: Saab 9-3 Aero from the UK

Just realised I haven't said how the MLV was stuck on! I bought a few rolls of heavy duty Velcro, cut into smaller strips then stuck one side to the CCF and the other to the MLV. I've had the cards off a few times since and they haven't budged.

Same as the other doors, 2 & 4mm CLD on the outer skin, 2mm on the inner skin in places, then covered with 4mm CCF then topped off with 2mm MLV. And then the 15mm egg crate foam on the back of the card. Deadened to death and really makes a difference, took hours & hours but well worth the effort

I had one roll of Velcro left so had to use it wisely to cover both doors!

This is one sheet of Dodo MLV, plenty for each door and any large off cuts ill be re-using for the floor/boot.

Here's how I've done the Velcro on the last 2 doors, could really do with some more to be safe but I thing it'll be ok with the door card holding it in place.

                      Door card done

That's the doors deadened, not the best job but will do me! Took AGES!!!!!!

Interior next (very nearly sent me over the edge trying to get everything back in!!! Not exactly Mr DIY and this is a huge learning curve!)

Re: Saab 9-3 Aero from the UK

I'll just copied & paste the next part from my UKS thread as there's loads of pics & photobuckets playing up

                        Interior out today.....I AM KNACERED!!!!

Loads of pics on this one sorry.....

First thing to get out was the front seats, they came out pretty easily which was a nice surprise! I did the passengers first just in case I broke something! They're just held in with 2 bolts on the back of the runners, seat belts belt on with a star socket, then you need to lift the back up and fiddle around with the front until its released. Then there's a big connector that needs to come apart...10 mins and its out

You need a T45 Torx bit

2x bolts at the back of each runner, looks like they've got locktite on there but these came out ok.

                        Seat belt bolt

                        E14 bit needed

Big connector (no idea what this is for? The seats are manual & not heated?)

Pull this out and it comes apart all Saab like

                        One seat out....

Amp 1 then had to come out.

T25 Torx bit needed (all these smaller Torx screws seem to be T25 which is handy!)

                        Amp off..

Fair bit of surface rust but its working fine, I'll be refitting this later on but it won't be used.

Drivers seat then came out out same as the passengers.

                          Rear seats out

These just needed a careful tug from behind at each end then the back comes up, putting them back in was a nightmare though!

Then the front side took a bit of wiggling to get out, these must hook into place or summat??

All seats out then onto the trim

T25 torx again and these were first off

Just had to carefully remove it then get the rest off piece by piece

Then off with this smart thingy

2 x screws then off it comes

Open the center box, take the rubber bottom out then unscrew these

                          Then start removing the rest

That's most of the trim now removed and I'm left with this:

Only problem (big problem) is I can't get the carpet out!! I've been trying to figure out a way but the only way I think it'll come out is if the entire centre console comes out....I'm not doing that! I know my limitations and stripping that lot is defo one!! Unless I've got it wrong it looks like they've laid the 2 bits of carpet first then bolted everything ontop of it...I'm screwed!!!

So the only way I can do the floor is lift a section of the carpet up at a time and lay the deadening as best I can.

The carpets pretty thick & heavy so even if I deaden 70% - 80% of the floor it should still make a nice difference. Looks like its got a thick layer of foam plus some vinyl attached already!!

So now the plan is to split the job into 4 and deaden each at a time, rear left & right first, then front left & right, I really wanted to get the lot out then do it properly but it's not happening & this just got more difficult as the carpet is a right swine to work around!!!!
